# November Quick Hitter

## Welcome to this month’s Quick Hitter! Cooler mornings. Wetter ground. And a few reminders to keep your day running smoothly this November. Let’s get into it.

**Stay Off the Grass**

Fall brings beautiful leaves and beautiful lawns that can swallow a pumper truck. Rain, cooler temperatures, and less sunlight mean the ground can stay softer longer. What looks solid from the cab could leave you stuck, cutting ruts, and making a very avoidable phone call.

Our trucks haul a lot. They’re not built for off-roading. Keep Service Sanitation vehicles off the grass. When access conditions look questionable, park safely, get out, and inspect the area before proceeding. A quick walk can reveal trouble, but it doesn’t prove the ground can support a loaded truck.

If it’s soft, wet, or you’re unsure, stop and call dispatch. They’ll coordinate with the customer on another plan for service or pickup.

**Three Points of Contact**

Wet boots, icy stake beds, and slippery grab handles can turn one rushed move into a painful fall. Every time you climb in or out, face the truck or trailer and keep three points of contact: two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand. Use the designated steps and grab handles, and keep your hands free. Clear mud, snow, and ice from your boots and steps, and check the ground before stepping down. Wear your required steel-toe boots with ankle support and slip-resistant soles and skip the jump. This is your workday, not a gymnastics tryout.

**Cold Temps = Low Tire Pressure**

Did you know tire pressure can decrease as temperatures drop? As the air inside your tires cools, it exerts less pressure. That’s why your truck’s low-pressure light may come on when you first start your day, then go off as warmer weather and driving heat the tires and raise the pressure. During your pre-trip if it seems low consult with a mechanic to see if it’s safe to drive. If a tire is below cold-weather specification, have it properly inflated before leaving the yard. Don’t rely on just driving to bring it up to spec. Proper air pressure helps your tires safely carry the load, so check it before you roll.

**Always Dress in Layers**

If you’ve ever needed a winter coat at sunrise and short sleeves by lunch, you know the challenge. As temperatures drop, dress in layers you can adjust as conditions and your workload change: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer, and an outer layer that blocks wind and rain.

Remove a layer when you start feeling too warm to avoid excessive sweating. Sweat can leave clothing damp, and damp clothing can chill you quickly when you slow down. Bring a warm hat, insulated work gloves, and waterproof work boots. Add a suitable face covering when conditions call for it.

Keep spare socks, gloves, and dry clothing in the cab. They don’t take much space and wet socks have never improved anyone’s day.
