90-Degree Trailer Backing Drill

In this module, we'll review the 90-Degree Trailer Backing Drill.

Next up is our 90-degree backing course. To begin this drill, we’ll first take notice of the 3 cones located along the left side of the truck and trailer. These cones represent our “dock”. There’s then a 4th cone that is placed roughly 20 yards ahead and another cone 75 yards to the left of that cone.

To successfully perform the 90-degree backing method, we’ll start by pulling the truck and trailer forward just far enough that the truck and trailer are no longer in the “dock”. We’ll then make a hard left turn towards the cone that will be around 75 yards to the left.

When the 4th cone is located at the driver side of the truck cab, we’ll place the truck in reverse and begin backing slowly. Our goal now is to return the truck and trailer back to the dock where we started. In this drill, we’ll be able to get out and look as many times as needed; however, we’ll only be allowed one correction by pulling forward. If additional corrections are needed, we’ll need to pull back to the starting position next to cone #4.
