In this article, we'll briefly review our Winter Methanol and Salt Brine Mix to prevent porta potty freeze-ups.
Here at Service Sanitation, we use a special water mix in the winter months to prevent restrooms from freezing. This is sometimes known as a methanol or salt-brine mix depending on your branch. Each day, your cover sheet will indicate the type of water you’ll need for the day.
"Full Mix/Meth" means both water tanks will have winter mix. "Full Fresh" means both tanks will be filled with fresh water. "Split" means one tank will have fresh water and the other will have winter mix.
Your cover sheet may also indicate a specified amount of water needed rather than full tanks. This helps us ration accordingly as winter mix can be expensive. Any tanks containing the winter mix will be marked with colored tape or spray paint.
For branches using a menthol winter mix please note it can be easily identified by a few characteristics. It will have a blue tint as well as being bubbly or carbonated in appearance. This blue tint is not the blue chemical that is added during the service procedure. It is just a dye to differentiate the winter mix from fresh water. Standard “Blue” will still need to be added during the service process.
Remember, winter water mix is for toilet tank use only and is not suitable for handwashing purposes. For rinsing, windshield washer fluid should be chemical of choice. To learn more about our winter unit service procedures please click the link here.
